Butterfly – Furniture Series

With this series of side and coffee tables, Ihab El Riz intertwines stories from past decades with the present, preserving them for the future.

The foundation of this product series largely consists of marble slabs from furniture dating back to the 1950s and 1960s. Loved and used in various households over decades, they bring their own identity and history. Ihab employs a sophisticated and meticulous design process to craft new forms, minimally invasive and transformative yet preserving the essence of the original slabs, without compromising the integrity of the marble. The once mundane marble slabs now radiate with timeless, sleek geometric forms, revitalized and reimagined.

The Butterfly series is an artistic and unique masterpiece due to the individuality of the heavy marble slabs, contrasted by a seemingly light, clear, and asymmetrical design language. The sculptural elegance combines nostalgic charm with contemporary design. The tables can be freely combined, functioning either as a group or individually as side tables, seamlessly blending into their surroundings.

This product series aims to understand that in today‘s time, it is essential for us designers to rely on existing materials in our design processes and rethink traditional processing methods.
